Installing glue down over concreteTo prevent moisture from coming through the wood over concrete you may need to install barrier layer first. Check with your glue manufacturer. Many of the newest glues do not require this any longer. As long as your hardwood has a good low moisture reading you can just trowel the glue down and lay the hardwoods.

concrete with feltWhen installing wood over concrete, one option to block the moisture from the concrete is to trowel glue down and then lay felt over it. This is a good idea if you are going to then lay down a 3/4 inch layer of plywood for a sub floor then nail down onto it. We have laid floors over concrete with a plywood subfloor and not glued down the felt with out any issues.

nail down hardwood floor nailerThis is a typical style floor nailer you can rent at a Home Depot for $25 a day. You simply set the nailer in the tongue area of the plank and hit the rubber tip with a mallet. This both moves and nails the wood into place. You will notice you cant use this nailer for the first few rows ( because the planks will move) or the last few rows ( because there is not enough room). You will need to use a finishing nailer and nail those rows strait down then use finish putty to cover the holes later.

Laying the snap down flooringLaying snap down is simply a matter of cutting the wood so the seams don't line up. Many snap down products are manufactured with chip wood and do not handle moister at all. So think about where you are laying these floors. Some product requires that all the ends are snapped togeither then the entire row is snapped into the previous row. Aug 11, 2007

Starting a glue down floorWhen starting a glue down floor you will want to space it 1/2" to 3/4" from the wall. This allows the wood to contract and expand. One trick to laying glue down on concrete is to carefully snap a caulk line the thickness of the plank plus a gap from the wall. Then set the first few rows and allow them to dry. That way you can press the new rows without them moving. Aug 11, 2007
